How Does the Air Suspension System Work?

Air Suspension System

An air suspension system is a type of vehicle suspension system that uses air springs instead of traditional steel springs. The air springs are filled with compressed air, which acts as a cushion to absorb shocks and vibrations from the road. The system is equipped with an air compressor that constantly adjusts the air pressure in the springs to maintain a smooth and comfortable ride. One of the main benefits of air suspension is that you can adjust its pressure to suit different driving conditions, such as carrying heavy loads or towing a trailer. This provides a level of versatility that traditional steel spring suspensions cannot match. The Air Suspension System can also be controlled electronically, allowing the ride height to be adjusted for improved aerodynamics or increased ground clearance.

Components of Air Suspension System:

1. Air Compressor:

The air compressor pumps air into the air springs. It supports the weight of the vehicle. The air springs are adjustable and can be inflated or deflated to change the ride height and stiffness of the suspension.

2. Height Sensors:

Height sensors detect the variations in the ride height of the vehicle and adjust the air pressure accordingly. The sensors send signals to the control valves, which regulate the airflow into and out of the air springs.

3. Control Valves:

Control valves are responsible for controlling the air pressure in the air springs. They can be manually adjusted by the driver or automatically adjusted based on signals from the height sensors. The control valves work in conjunction with the air compressor to ensure that the air pressure in the air springs is maintained at the correct level.

In addition to these basic components, many air suspension systems also include shock absorbers and air suspension bags.

Working Mechanism of an Air Suspension System?

The air suspension system includes airbags and tires on each corner of the vehicle as a replacement for a metal spring. The airbag has compressed air inside. It is helpful in maintaining pressure inside it and the height of the vehicle.

The air suspension system includes parts such as an air compressor, air springs, height sensors, and valves. The air compressor pumps air into the bags that help sustain the load weight of the vehicle. During motion, air springs compress & rebound. It adjusts itself automatically or you can do it manually to provide a comfortable & smooth ride. The height sensors detect the changes in the height of the vehicle and send signals to control valves causing air to flow into or out of the springs. If your vehicle has excess load, you can adjust the pressure in the air springs for more support.

Advantages of Air Suspension Systems:

  1. The Air Suspension system improves comfort during the ride. It reduces the shocks and gives you more comfort and stability.
  2. You can adjust the air pressure to manually control your system according to your load’s weight.
  3. This suspension system is lighter than the traditional suspension system. It results in better fuel efficiency and handling of the vehicle.
  4. It allows you customization of your ride height and stiffness. It allows drivers to ride their vehicles in a way they like it.

Disadvantages of Air Suspension Systems:

1. Air suspension systems are more complex than traditional suspension systems, which can make them more difficult and expensive to repair.

2. Air suspension systems require regular maintenance, including checking and adjusting the air pressure in the air springs.

3. Failure in an air suspension system can result in a complete loss of suspension support. It would then be very difficult to drive the vehicle.

4. Air suspension systems are typically more expensive than traditional suspension systems. As a result, these are less accessible to budget-conscious consumers.

5. Air suspension systems rely on air compressors, which can consume significant amounts of energy and contribute to environmental pollution.

Maintenance of the Air Suspension System:

Maintenance of air suspension systems is important to ensure the longevity and proper functioning of the system. Regular checkups and maintenance tasks can help prevent potential problems and costly repairs in the future.

1.Regularly checking the air pressure in the air springs is an important part of air suspension maintenance. The air pressure should be within the manufacturer’s recommended range for the vehicle’s weight and load.

2. Regularly inspect the airlines and air springs to detect any signs of damage or wear.

3. Air filters in the air compressor should be replaced regularly to ensure proper airflow and to prevent contamination of the system.

4. Regularly inspect the air springs, air lines, and other components for signs of damage or wear. If you find any damaged parts, replace them immediately to stop further damage to the system.

In addition to regular maintenance, it is important to be aware of common problems that can occur with air suspension systems. Some of these problems include

 1.Leaks:

Leaks can cause a loss of air pressure and a decline in ride comfort. To diagnose a leak, inspect the airlines and air springs for any signs of damage or wear.

2. Compressor failure:

The air compressor is a critical component of the air suspension system, and if it fails, the system will not function properly.

3.  Height sensors:

Height sensors detect changes in ride height and send signals to the control valves, which regulate airflow into and out of the air springs. If a height sensor fails, it can cause ride height problems.

4. Control valves:

Control valves regulate the airflow into and out of the air springs. If a control valve fails, it can cause ride height problems.

Conclusion:

Air Suspension systems are costlier than traditional suspension systems. This is due to its effective props, and advanced controlling system. If you have a budget and want to make your vehicle more comfortable, there is nothing good as installing an air suspension system in your vehicle. It improves your overall riding experience including comfort, speed, control, and also fuel efficiency of the vehicle.
